THE PATH
The obvious yes
Someone offers you the larger job. More money, more standing, the obvious yes – and you hear yourself, a little to your own surprise, asking about the travel; whether you’d still make the things on Saturdays; how late the evenings really run.
Maybe you take it. Maybe you don’t. That isn’t the part worth noticing. The part worth noticing is the small surprise – that something in you was already weighing a thing the obvious yes had not counted, and weighing it heavily enough to slow your hand.
We tell ourselves we decide in open space. That the options are laid out, we consider them freely, and we choose. It feels to us like standing in a clear field with every direction available. But the moment standing in the doorway says otherwise. You did not weigh everything from neutral and arrive at a preference.
You arrived already carrying a preferring – an established order, a sense of what matters more than what – and it did the quiet work before the deliberating began. The obvious yes was not, as it turns out, neutral. Your preference was the shape of something you already hold, showing itself for a second in the gap between the offer and your answer.
You did not put that order there on purpose, and you have mostly never looked at it. It was laid down over years, by a hundred small settlings you never marked at the time, until it became simply how things seem – what reads as important, what barely registers, what you would grieve to lose and what you would not. It runs underneath the choosing the way the banks run under a river. You do not see the banks – you see the water.
There is a landscape under your decisions, and you have been walking it in the dark, calling its walls obvious. You do not have to turn the light on, most people never do, and the walls hold either way; a life can be lived entirely by the sense of what seems obvious, and many good ones are.
But you felt the floor move just now – a preference you did not know you had, making itself felt in a doorway. That is the thing it is hard to unsee. Not an instruction, not a verdict on the job, nothing you have to act on at all. Only this: that the field was never open, that you have been choosing inside a shape the whole time, and that the shape is a thing that can be looked at.
From low down it all looks like flat ground and free choice. From a little higher you can see the channel you have been following – where it runs, and where, if you ever wanted to, you might decide cut a new channel.
