What It Looks Like
Three situations follow: a person weighing a decision, a company doing well, a rule being kept carefully. Each is a pattern rather than a story – common enough that you may find you have been inside one of them.
A decision that looked settled
Someone capable, doing well, with a clear win in hand – a strong result, an offer, a run of success – weighing whether to press the advantage. Held up to axios3, the question quietly changes. Not how good is this result, but how much of it is mine, and how much is borrowed? Nothing about the result changes. What changes is that the question they’d been answering turns out not to be the one that mattered.
A company growing fast, and proud of it
Every number up and to the right. Underneath, quieter signals: people leaving a little faster, the original thing getting a little worse, the long-tenured saying it isn’t what it was. The instinct is to push harder. The instrument asks something else: is the growth enlarging what it grows from – the product, the people, the customers – or consuming them to move the number? The figures can’t settle it; they sit on the wrong side of the line. The question stops being how do we grow faster and becomes what is this growth feeding on.
A rule everyone was following well
A standing policy, a settled priority – the thing a place quietly judges itself by – and a team scrupulously meeting it. The natural question is whether they’re keeping it well enough. The instrument turns it over: is the rule itself still answerable to anything beyond its own continuation, or has keeping it become the point? The question moves from are we following the rule to is the rule still keeping faith with what it was for.
The Same Move, Three Times
You may have noticed the three are one move in different clothes. Each refuses to let a fact — the result, the growth, the compliance — settle a question of worth the fact cannot actually answer. That is the whole instrument, and it works the same way on a private decision, an organisation, or a standing rule, because it is one way of seeing rather than three tools.
What It Asks Of You
That you do the seeing. The programme offers a way of seeing; and the price of entry is the seeing itself. The instrument holds no view of your situation that you don’t give it – it keeps you honest while you look, but it can’t see in your place. That isn’t a limit we mean to fix; it’s the whole arrangement.
