THE PATH

You know you shouldn’t – and you do it anyway. The message sent in temper; the thing you’d sworn off, reached for again. And as you do it, a small flinch: the wince of going against yourself. Not confusion about which was better – you could see that perfectly. The wince is the proof you saw it: you only flinch against something you hold.

That tells you exactly where the fault is, and it is not in the seeing. The seeing was fine; the flinch says so. The gap was between what you held and what you did – and you felt the gap as you crossed it. The fault is in the act.

Which is why the usual repair backfires. The instinct is to understand it better – another reason to dig up, another article to read, another promise gripped tighter than the last. Going deeper is supposed to be the work that delivers the insight, so you keep digging – even when you half-sense the answer is in plain sight. And it is; you saw clearly which was the better path, understanding was never the thing you lacked.

You could always see that the work gets done in the doing. Make the better act the simple one and the worse act the costly one: lay your sports kit out the night before; put what tempts you out of reach; do it with someone, where not showing up has a cost. Don’t argue yourself across the gap – narrow it.
